Matt received his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from the University of Michigan. He returned to his hometown to obtain his MD and PhD degrees at the University of Pittsburgh, where he did his thesis work with Dr. Xiao-lun Wu in the Department of Physics. He completed his residency training and clinical neurophysiology fellowship in the Department of Neurology at UCLA. Matt went on to do his postdoctoral training in the labs of Dr. Tom Otis at UCLA and Dr. Fred Gage at the Salk Institute before joining the faculty of the Department of Neurosciences at UCSD in 2016.
Stacy graduated from UCSD with a B.S. in Cognitive Science specializing in Neuroscience. She is interested in systems neuroscience and plans to pursue a Ph.D. in Neuroscience. She walks her fluffy dog Poro and likes to eat fried chicken when she is not in the lab.
Samir is a PhD student in the UCSD Bioengineering Department. He is mainly interested in designing new optical tools to study the brain in vivo. When not in the lab, Samir enjoys training for marathons and attempting to surf.
Shannon graduated from UCSD with a B.S. in Biochemistry and Cell Biology and is now working toward a Masters in Biology. She is interested in the pathophysiology of brain diseases and is currently investigating mechanisms underlying mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. Her plan is to attend medical school in 2019. In her free time, she enjoys hiking and trying new foods.
Emily earned her B.S. in Physiology and Neuroscience at UCSD and is completing her M.S. in Biology. She is interested in studying adult neurogenesis and memory formation. Moving forward, she hopes to attend medical school in 2019. In her free time, Emily enjoys painting with watercolors and snorkeling at La Jolla Cove.
Bryan is graduating from UCSD with a B.S. in Physiology & Neuroscience. He is interested in immunochemistry and learned patterns in mouse behavior. In his free time, Bryan enjoys surfing and snowboarding.
Cris is a junior majoring in physics at UCSD and interested in electronics, optics, and fundamental physics. Cris plans to pursue a Ph.D. in physics after graduation. When Cris is not in the lab he likes to cook with his girlfriend and listen to music.
Summer is an undergraduate student in the UCSD Bioengineering Department. She is interested in how the changes in the hippocampal dentate gyrus lead to temporal lobe epilepsy and developing medical devices. When not in lab, Summer enjoys trying new restaurants and watching Netflix.
Alex graduated with a degree in physics from UCSD in 2018 with an emphasis on computational physics. Alex work on algorithms for segmentation and analysis of calcium imaging data. Alex is interested in biophysics and computational modeling and plans to pursue graduate degree in physics.
Tammy is a highly motivated junior at UC San Diego, majoring in Cognitive Science – Human Computer Interaction. She believes the integration of science and art can make the world a better place. In her free time, Tammy loves cooking and exploring new cuisines.
Dennis is a senior undergraduate student at UCSD majoring in Electrical Engineering. Dennis is interested in embedded electronics, automation control, and aerospace technologies. Dennis enjoys skiing and tinkering in his spare time.
Cooper is currently a medical student at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), where he continues to pursue his interests in translational research and clinical medicine.
